Recent Biking

Autumn has Fall-en! Cooler weather means there's no excuse to not get out and make those long uphill rides, time some trials, or maybe even grind some gravel!

My rides are recorded, of course, in excessive, modern, technical detail. See my Ride With GPS, Garmin Connect or Strava pages for more number-crunching from slightly different points-of-view. My photo gallery for BAK 2018 is available, with new ones to come. I have previous ride galleries and more, too. Finally, there are a few ride videos on my YouTube channel.

Recent Running

Being a glutton for punishment, I occasionally run, too. Not very well, but I do run. Like my rides, I record my runs in excessive, modern, technical detail. See Garmin Connect or Strava again.

Genealogy

The genealogy sites are in the midst of a long-overdue update!

The Needham genealogy was last in December 2014. The web pages for all of the individuals in the family tree have been updated, as has the GEDCOM file. Overall site upgrades and styling updates are soon to come.

The Simmons family tree also received its long-promised update as of December 2014, though only the GEDCOM file has been changed so far. I'm having a technical problem with the web pages themselves which will get solved in due time.

I promise that I really am working on a comprehensive update to the genealogy site. I've designed a new look for the web pages, and I'm rewriting the program that automatically creates those pages. That's more tedious than complicated. Your patience will be soon rewarded.

Other Stuff, Rants & Raves

  • "During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher."
    - Edgar Allen Poe, The Fall of the House of Usher, 1839
(The best run-on sentence to open a story in the English language.)
  • "It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness."
    - Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Paul Clifford, 1830
(The worst run-on sentence to open a story in the English language.)

What I'm Reading

"The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid." - Jane Austen, "Northanger Abbey"
