"...Jonathan, was five years old when he came to Canada with his parents. There was
no school at The Forty, so he was educated at home. He later enlisted in the 4th Lincoln
Regiment, and fought at Lundy's Lane during the War of 1812. In 1806, he married
Catherine Beamer of The Forty. They took up residence on a farm given to them by his
parents, and adjoining the Pettit family property. In 1820, Jonathan built the lovely stone
farm house known as The Evergreens. The house, built on the foundation of an earlier
log house, is still standing..."
