"Hannah Smith (Richard, Richard), b. 27 Feb 1702/3, d. 10 Sep 1750, married 1718, at Smithtown,
Captain James Fanning, of Southold, b. 30 Apr 1694, bap. 12 Aug 1694, d. 15 Apr 1779, son of
Thomas and Frances (Ellis) Fanning, of Stonington, Conn. The old family birth record reads -
"Hannah Smith the dafter of Richard Smith was borne ye 27 Day of February In the yeare of our
Lord 1702/3." She died on the passage home after a visit to England and was buried in the
burial ground at the home place, as were others of the family, but many years ago their remains
were removed to Riverhead Cemetery, where the stones can be seen...Captain Fanning married
(2), at Stonington, Conn., Mrs. Thankful (Hinckley) Chesebrough, daughter of Samuel Hinckley
and widow of Joseph Chesebrough."
