[3174] "Contributions to the Genealogies of the First Settlers
of the Ancient County of Albany, from 1630 to 1800"
Professor Jonathan Pearson
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyalbany/pearson/
"The First Settlers Philip and David Schuyler, were more commonly
called Philip and David Pieterse, being sons of Pieter Schuyler."

[Broderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #5040, Date of Import: 3 Mar 2000]

David Pieterse Schuyler was born about 12 February 1636 at Amsterdam. The name Schuyler is from the maternal line. The father, like most Dutchmen of the time, had no family name. It was unusual but not unique for sons to adopt their mother's name.

In 1624 the Dutch established Fort Orange (now Albany) New York. David's oldest brother, Philip, came to America in 1650 and settled at Rensselaerwyck, now known as Albany, near Fort Orange. David came to Rensselaerwyck probably around 1656, following the death of their father. Both brothers thereafter were active in the fur trade, which was where fortunes were made. In the first hundred years of settlement, most of the colony's wealth came from furs.

13 October 1657, David Schuyler married Catalyn Ver Planck. 29 November 1692, they lived near the northeast corner of the city walls by the water side, on the south corner of Broadway and Steuben Street, and in 1699 she petitioned for an addition of 14 feet to the north side of her lot which was refused by the city authorities because "it will reach too near Ye City Stockadoes". this lot was occupied in 1709 by Jacobus and Abraham, their sons.

The Schenectady Massacre was one of the first attacks (1690) by the French on the English Colonists in America at the beginning of King Williams War (1689-1697). Count Frontenac came to Canada as Governor in 1689. He made elaborate plans for driving the English out of New York, but found the Canadians so demoralized by Iroquois raids that he made a series of counter raids against frontier settlements. In the hope of restoring their confidence, he sent a party of Canadians and Indian allies to Schdenectady, a Dutch village of about forty houses 15 miles northwest of Albany. Its inhabitants did not suspect any danger. Their town was palisaded but they had left the gates open. On the night of February 8, 1690, a party of French and Indians entered the town, burned it to the ground, and killed many of its inhabitants. The terrified survivors fled to Albany. Bible records state David Schuyler died 2 days after fleeing from Schenectady 9 or 11 February 1690.

The will of David Schuyler (Fernow NY Wills pg. 336) 21 May 1688 proved 11 April 1694 of albany merchant: mentions wife Catelyntie, children: Peter, Geertruy, Abraham, Maritye, David, Myndert, Cobis and Catlyntje.

CATALYN VER PLANCK - was born February 1639. She died 8 October 1708. The Bible record gives her name as Catalyna Schuyler Terhyers which Fernow thinks is a nickname for her father. She is the daughter of Abraham Ver Planck and Maria Vigne.
