Nathaniel inherited Watchogue Neck and half of Mattuck Neck, on the south shore of Long Island, with half his right on Moriches Island,
and his father's homestead in Smithtown.
By purchase and exchange from his brother Richard, Nathaniel became the owner of the greater part of the Patentship of Moriches.
The will of Nathaniel Smith is dated 20 May 1761, proved 10 April 1765. It leaves to his wife Phebe household goods, the negro girl
Jude, brown horse and riding chair, "my great room in my house and 2 south bedrooms", sufficient firewood, and £30 a year; to son
Josiah all lands in Moriches and "beach from Bayles Stage west"; to second son, William, lands in Southampton and £1000 to be paid
by Josiah, "but if he refuse to pay it then Wm. is to have the farm Watchogue where Josiah now lives"; to the three daughters, Mary Gardiner,
Phebe and Prudence, £1000 each, the unmarried daughters to have a home and maintenance; makes three sons, Josiah, William and
Abraham Gardiner, Esq., executors.

"Nathaniel Smith (Richard, Richard), b. 30 Jan 1697/8, d. 30 Mch 1765, married Phebe Howell.
She died in Southampton, 26 Aug 1775, in her 74th year, while visiting the family of her son,
Dr. William Smith, who had died the same month. She was buried beside her son in the
Southampton Cemetery. As given in the family record, 'Nathaniel Smith was borne the 30 Day
January about 2 o'clock In the afternoone in the yeare of our Lord 1697-8.'"

"PHEBE HOWELL, daughter of Josiah Howell, was born on 26 Aug 1703. She
was married to NATHANIEL SMITH, son of Richard & Hannah (Tooker) Smith. He
was born on 30 Jan 1697/8. The will of her father, Josiah Howell, blacksmith, of
Southampton, dated 8 Mar 1752, devised 'to my two daughters, Phebe and Mary, ten
pounds each' (CNYHS 28:394). Nathaniel Smith died on 30 Mar 1765. PHEBE (HOWELL)
SMITH died at Southampton, Long Island while on a visit to the family of her son,
Dr. William Smith (who had died earlier that month). Her gravestone at Northend
burying ground was inscribed: In Memory of / Mrs Phebe Relict of / Nathan'l Smith
Esq / who departed this / Life Aug'st 26th / AD 1775 / In the 74th Year / of her
Age (LIE 5:71)."
